Frequently Asked Questions
What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a specific method that focuses on unresolved trauma. It’s a well researched, evidence based, therapy technique that helps reprocess trauma by bilaterally stimulating the hemispheres of the brain. EMDR is most heavily studied regarding trauma, but has also shown effectiveness in other areas, such as low self-esteem. It can also help with disturbing memories, anxiety, or mood issues.
How Does The EMDR Process Work?
EMDR uses various methods to achieve left and right brain hemisphere (bilateral) stimulation. Combining auditory, tactile, and eye movement techniques stimulates brain activity that is similar to the stages of sleep where we process events, experiences, and information. The result integrates traumatic events, memories, and feelings in a way that takes our nervous system off of “high alert”. The EMDR process consists of several treatment phases. I will talk with you, learn your history, and walk you through the therapy process. Once we identify targets for EMDR therapy we systematically work our way through desensitizing and reintegrating traumatic events. The final phase usually entails preparation for navigating historically triggering situations more aligned with the life you want to live, not with a chronically activated nervous system.
What Issues Does EMDR Address?
EMDR helps with many issues. These include PTSD, anxiety, phobias, OCD, panic attacks, and others. I’m passionate about helping you address the source of your mental health concerns. Together, we can create a unique therapy plan that enables you to move from confusion to calm.
What If I Don’t Feel Comfortable Talking?
If you don’t like the idea of traditional talk therapy EMDR is ideal. After gathering an initial history and establishing treatment goals the EMDR process does not rely on conversation to move forward. It is a more active and experiential approach that does not require you to continuously retell traumatic stories.
